Salvation Army kicks-off Angel Tree event

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree event kicked off this past Saturday at the Shoppes at River Crossing in Macon.

The ribbon cutting was held in conjunction with the outdoor mall’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony; the massive spruce being lit thanks to a little help and a countdown from Santa Claus himself!

Afterward, children were able to visit with St. Nick – and Mrs. Claus, too –  to ask for presents to fill the space underneath their own trees at home.

However, for some children, getting a gift for the holidays won’t be so easy.

“For a lot of families we’re helping in central Georgia, this will be the only Christmas their children will have,” said Major Frances Gilliam of the Salvation Army. “And we count on the community to come and support us and support the Angel Tree as they come and adopt one of our angels.”

Anyone who wishes to adopt an angel can stop by the Salvation Army’s booth located at the center of the Shoppes. Simply pick an angel from the tree, sign that child’s name out, and donate any gifts you buy to the Salvation Army and they’ll make sure they reach him or her right in time for Christmas day.

“If you’re able to adopt a child and provide Christmas for that child, then come see us,” Maj. Gilliam said. “We appreciate the community and the support we receive every year.”

The booth will be open from 10a.m. to 7p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1p.m. to 5p.m. on Sundays.

The final day to help is December 13th.
