Sam Shortline Excursion Train celebrates National Train Day
WEST CORDELE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Saturday, May 10th is National Train Day, and to celebrate, the Sam Shortline Excursion Train will host it’s Touch-A-Train event. Terry Miller stopped by 41 Today and sat down with 41NBC’s Amanda Castro to talk the event. The history behind the event is May 10, 1869, marks the day the ‘golden spike’ was driven into the final tie at Promontory Summit, Utah, ceremonially completing the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.
This family-friendly event allows kids and adults to get up close and take photos of the Sam Shortline train cars and the Heart of Georgia Railroad locomotive. You can talk to the conductors as well as take a train ride over to Lake Blackshear.
In addition to the train, many emergency and large vehicles will be on display, as well as NASCAR driver David Ragan’s CSX "Play it Safe" race car (no driver appearance) and the Atlanta Motor Speedway pace car.
Kids will enjoy the bouncy house, miniature course, and corn-hole games and have the opportunity to meet Smokey the Bear, the Chick-Fil-A Cow, McGruff the Crime Dog, and the Georgia State Park’s Gopher mascot.
The event is Saturday, May 10th from 10am to 4pm at Georgia Veterans State Park (Sam Shortline Deport) in Cordele, Georgia. Admission is $2 and train rides over Lake Blackshear are $5.
