Sonny Carter Elementary Celebrates 20th Anniversary

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Twenty years ago Sonny Carter Elementary School opened its doors to students in Bibb County. This year the school is commemorating the big milestone. The school’s principal, Latricia Reeves, and media specialist, Kelly Ennis, stopped by 41 Today to share how the school is celebrating.

There will be a celebration Thursday, February 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school located at 5910 Zebulon Road. All are invited to attend and celebrate 20 years of educating students and encouraging them to “Challenge the Edge of the Universe.” the school’s motto in honor of its namesake, Sonny Carter.

According to Bibb schools, Manley Lanier “Sonny” Carter Jr. graduated from Lanier High School in Macon in 1965. He went to Emory University where he earned a doctor of medicine degree. While there, he played professional soccer for the Atlanta Chiefs. After he earned his degree, Carter joined the Navy as a flight surgeon and pilot. NASA selected him to become an astronaut in 1984 and he was on the first night launch aboard the shuttle Discovery. He died on April 5, 1991 in a plane crash on the way to Brunswick.

Former administrators, staff members, and students will participate in the celebration. There will be math and science activities during the event which are two subjects in which Carter excelled.
