United Way of Central Georgia is giving away books to kids

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – United Way of Central Georgia is taking action to make the community a better place. This weekend, volunteers are doing just that during the organization’s Day of Action Book Giveaway. Betsy Fitzgerald stopped by 41 Today to tell us more about it.

Fitzgerald said the goal is to give every child who attends the event a book for his or her own personal library. She said they’ve collected more than 5,000 books. Fitzgerald added many of our community’s disadvantaged youth don’t have books at home. She said this is a great way to encourage literacy and let kids start their own library at home.

There will also be several fun activity stations and local author Rhonda Singletary will read a portion of her book, Project Dreams.

The Day of Action Book Giveaway is Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Buck Melton Community Center.
