World Blood Donor Day: Donations need year-round

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The American Red Cross is urging middle Georgians to give blood this June in honor of World Blood Donor Day.

The annual event is a day blood donor organizations, like the American Red Cross, ask millions from around the world to give blood to help save a life.

External Communications Manager, Kristen Stancil, says the need for blood donations is year-round.

Especially, during the summer months, because donations are low.

According to a news release, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a lifesaving blood transfusion. The Red Cross must collect approximately 14,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.

The Red Cross says all blood types are needed. For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
